Brian Notcutt and Andrew Russell create the Theatre in the District.

Andrew Russell taught for ten years, left teaching in 1998 and took over Rondebosch Travel. In 2000 he started Cape Africa Tours, specialising in incoming sporting and cultural tours.

Andrew also launched Gateway To Newlands, offering guided behind the scenes tours of Newlands rugby and cricket stadiums, the SA Rugby Museum and the Sports Science Institute of South Africa.

His interest in sport lead to the creation of Kids2Kids an organization whereby sport interested travelers can support those less privileged than themselves. In 2006 he saw a shortened version of Woza Cape Town and was thrilled to see a unique show about Cape Town using South African material and songs and showcasing the talent of Cape Town’s youth.

The next day he met with Brian Notcutt, a drama teacher and creator of the show. He shared ideas with him of a unique evening for tourists which involved a Cape cuisine food experience followed by a show about Cape Town giving a insight into life in Cape Town. Together they searched in and outside Cape Town for an appropriate venue until they both agreed that the show should take place in District Six. This resulted in visits to all church halls, school halls, old buildings and finally the discovery of the Lydia Williams Centre of Memory where the Theatre in the District was finally born.

THE THEATRE ....

CssTemplatesWeb.com

Nestled in the last surviving remnants of the original historic District Six is an innovative new theatre housed in a wonderful old building that has had a rich tradition of serving its community and promoting the arts.
District Six is a township suburb of the original Cape Town, home to vibrant communities which were sheltered, caught up and crushed in the history of South Africa's politics.
Step back in time in this venue which quietly captures the past at every turn and see interesting, dynamic and new productions finding life in the midst of the old destruction.

Every Monday you can experience Woza Cape Town, a show filled with South African music, dance, poetry and song. A human story which looks out beyond a history of pain and despair and breathes life and hope into Cape Town’s future. READ MORE
